Biotin for hair loss: do you need it?

Biotin is one of the most heavily marketed hair supplements in Malaysia. Here is what the evidence says, who might actually be low in it, and why it can affect some blood test results.

Biotin, also called vitamin B7, is printed on the front of many hair, skin and nail supplements sold in Malaysian pharmacies and online. The marketing often suggests that more biotin means more hair. The research tells a more modest story. Biotin matters for the body, but for most people who already eat a varied diet, there is little evidence that extra biotin changes hair loss.

What biotin does in the body

Biotin is a B vitamin that helps the body use energy from food. It is found in many foods, including eggs, nuts, seeds, some vegetables and meat 1. Because it is so widely present in food, and because gut bacteria also make some, true biotin deficiency is uncommon in people who eat a normal diet 2.

When low biotin can affect hair

In the uncommon situations where a person is truly deficient, hair thinning can be one of the signs, along with skin rashes and other symptoms 2 3. Deficiency has been described in some inherited conditions affecting biotin use, with certain medicines, with long-term eating of large amounts of raw egg white, and in some people with significant gut problems or poor nutrition 2.

In these situations, replacing biotin can help. The key point is that the benefit has been seen in people who were low to begin with.

What the evidence shows for everyone else

A review of the published reports on biotin and hair found that the cases where biotin helped were people with an underlying deficiency or a specific condition. The authors found no good evidence that biotin supplements help hair in healthy people with normal levels 2. A wider review of vitamins and minerals in hair loss reached a similar view: there is not enough evidence to recommend biotin for common types of hair loss such as pattern hair loss, unless a deficiency has been shown 4.

So if your hair is thinning because of DHT and pattern hair loss, or shedding because of a recent illness or stress, biotin is unlikely to be the missing piece. For those situations, read which vitamin deficiencies are linked to hair loss and hair loss treatment in Malaysia.

The blood test problem

This is the part many people do not know. High-dose biotin, of the kind found in some hair and beauty supplements, can interfere with certain laboratory tests that use biotin in the testing process 5. Depending on the test, results can come out falsely high or falsely low. Tests that have been affected include some thyroid function tests and some heart tests 5.

This matters because thyroid problems are one of the conditions doctors may check when hair falls out. If biotin distorts the result, it can cause confusion. If you take a biotin supplement and are going for blood tests, tell the doctor or laboratory. They may advise you to stop it for a period before the test 5. See blood tests for hair loss for what is usually checked.

Is biotin safe?

Biotin is generally considered low risk at the amounts found in food. The NHS notes that you should be able to get the biotin you need from a varied diet 1. Very high-dose products go well beyond that. The main practical concern is the lab test interference described above, plus the cost of a supplement that may not help.

How to think about biotin supplements

  • Start with the cause. Hair loss has many causes. Finding yours matters more than any single vitamin 6.
  • Look at your diet first. A varied diet with enough protein, iron and other nutrients supports hair as part of overall health 3.
  • Be wary of high doses. Many hair supplements contain far more biotin than the body needs, and more is not shown to be better for hair 2.
  • Tell your doctor before blood tests. This is the single most useful step if you do take biotin 5.
  • Set realistic expectations. If you try a supplement, judge it over months, and do not delay seeing a doctor if hair loss is heavy, sudden or patchy.

Biotin in multi-ingredient supplements

Many products combine biotin with zinc, iron, vitamins and plant extracts. A combination makes it harder to know what, if anything, is helping. It can also mean doubling up if you take more than one product. Read the label and add up the amounts. Our guide to hair supplements in Malaysia explains how to judge these claims, and zinc and hair loss explains why more zinc is not always better.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if your hair loss is sudden, heavy or in patches, if you notice other symptoms such as tiredness, weight change, rashes or irregular periods, or if you have tried supplements for months without change 6. A doctor can decide whether tests are useful and which ones.

The bottom line

Biotin is essential, but most Malaysians who eat a varied diet are not short of it. Supplements are mainly useful for people with a confirmed deficiency. If you take one, keep the dose sensible and always mention it before a blood test.

Frequently asked questions

Does biotin make hair grow faster?

There is no good evidence that biotin speeds hair growth in people who are not deficient. The benefit has mainly been seen in people with low biotin or specific conditions 2.

How do I know if I am low in biotin?

True deficiency is uncommon in people with a varied diet. A doctor can assess your symptoms, diet and medicines and decide whether testing is needed 2 1.

Should I stop biotin before a blood test?

Tell the doctor or lab that you take it. High-dose biotin can affect some test results, and they may advise stopping it for a time beforehand 5.

Is biotin the same as vitamin B7?

Yes. Biotin is one of the B vitamins and is sometimes called vitamin B7 or vitamin H 1.
